Hackney Bridge wins Civic Trust Pro Tem Award

A mixed use scheme built by Glencar, Hackney Bridge in Newham, has recently been named as the winner of the 2022 Civic Trust Pro Tem Award.

The Pro Tem Award recognises temporary projects that make an outstanding contribution to the quality and appearance of the built environment. Award level schemes demonstrate excellence in architecture or design, whilst being sustainable, accessible and providing a positive civic contribution.

The project combines incubator space for local businesses and organisations with a public event space, food hall and independent retail, across 5 buildings around a central yard. The vision, which is already being fulfilled, is for the scheme to support start-ups and small local businesses, providing opportunities for collaboration and strengthening community ties. In some 12 years time the site will then be developed as part of the Olympic Legacy Plan.

The judges commented “There is much to praise about the scheme and its ambitions to provide good quality incubator space for a range of people and organisations situated in the local area.”

Glencar completed the design and build of the project for client Make Shift, working with a project team that included Turner Works, Structure Workshop, PSH Consulting, Christopher Smith Associates LLP and Astute Fire.
